During my tenure at Sierra Gold Nurseries, we had an on-going project to replace the legacy operations software with a modern technology, and upgrade the system with new features.

The platform chosen was OutSystems, which provided a link to the SAP Business One accounting platform as well as the SQL Server database we were utilizing.

Many features of SAP and OutSystems were used in the financial reporting and “balancing” the books (which was previously pretty much a manual process). Imports from spreadsheets and SAP transactions were done into custom tables, and analytical reports and graphs generated.

On the Operations side, the Inventory Control system was completely re-written to use a web-based interface. The new application allowed for Salesman history to be analyzed year-over-year, as well as similar customer views to augment the sales process. Sales History had never been available year-over-year by the Inventory Item, nor year-over-year Customer Sales history.

The OutSystems platform was very powerful and complete. If the platform didn’t natively provide for a feature or function (such as document management), the was a complete library of add-ons available either for free or for a very reasonable price.
